“Happiness” is what everyone longs for. It is the major objective of the Tenth National Economic and Social Development Plan (B.E. 2550-2554)

In paralleling the Plan, the Institute for Population and Social Research developed the happiness index as part of the Wellbeing Indicator: Western Study in Thailand.

This three-year project was conducted in 2005-2007, with sub-projects handled by the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Institute of Nutrition, Research Institute of Language and Culture of Asia and Institute for Population and Social Research. Pilot projects were in Kanchanaburi and Chainat and the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies coordinated research teams.

In the first year, the Institute for Population and Social Research collected data at provincial level in both provinces in to explore happiness of their population. It produced two reports of each province and hoped that findings would be academically useful and facilitate policy making for the better quality of life of population of the two provinces.

Later in the second and third year, happiness index and components were utilized by people in those pilot provinces at sub-district level. The results would be written in the report and be useful in other areas.
